Understanding the ever present risk of fire in commercial premises

Norfolk Fire Group understands the ever-present risk of fire in domestic and commercial buildings, and the importance of complying with fire safety legislation, protecting your business premises and your employees from the prospect of fire is essential.

Under the terms of The Regularity Reform (Fire Safety Order 2005), it is the duty of every employer to carry out a fire risk assessment of the workplace. Not only that, but it’s also the law for businesses in the United Kingdom! Ensuring your premises is fitted with the right commercial fire alarm system and adequate fire detection is one step towards mitigating the risk of fire.
Employers must provide and maintain the precautions against fire that are necessary to safeguard those who use their workplace, by nominating people to undertake specific roles as required by the emergency plan, consult their employees where people may be given specific roles and proposals for improving fire safety. They must inform other employers who have workplaces in the same building, of any significant risks they find, which might affect their employees and co-operate with them as necessary. Most workplaces are covered by the fire regulations. This puts responsibility on employers to make sure, that you and others are safe in the workplace.

COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS

What is a commercial Fire Alarm System?

There are two types of commercial fire alarm systems, conventional fire alarm systems, and addressable fire alarm systems.

A conventional fire alarm systems are a basic type of fire alarm system, that use a series of detectors interconnected by wiring, to monitor the presence of smoke or heat from a fire. The system then sounds an alarm to alert the occupant's of the building, to evacuate the premises. Conventional fire alarm systems are typically used in smaller buildings, like homes, small offices, and retail shops. They are cost-effective and easy to install. However, they do not provide as much information about the location of the fire, as a more sophisticated system, like addressable fire alarm systems. While conventional fire alarm systems are not as advanced as other fire alarm systems, they still provide an important and reliable way to detect and warn occupant's of a building about the presence of fire.

An addressable fire alarm system, is a type of fire detection network that is commonly used in commercial or large scale buildings. Its designed to identify and locate the source of a fire within the building, allowing firefighters or building management to respond quickly and effectively.

Addressable fire alarm systems are composed of a control panel, smoke and heat detectors, manual call points (MCP), notification devices, and communication equipment. Each device has a unique address that identifies its location, so when an alarm is triggered, the control panel can display the specific location of a fire, allowing for a targeted response.

Addressable fire alarm systems use looped wiring configuration, which means that multiple devices (Apollo, Hochiki, Nittan, Gent, Notifier,Siemens) can be connected to a single circuit without affecting other devices. This looped design ensures that if one devices fails, the rest will continue to function properly.

When a fire is detected, the control panel will activate the notification devices, which include sounders, strobe lights, and voice alert systems. In addition, the system can send notifications to building management or the fire authorities to alert them of the situation and dispatch emergency services if necessary.

Overall, an addressable fire alarm system is reliable and an effective way to detect and respond to fires in large commercial buildings and other public spaces.

BS5839-1 FIRE ALARM DESIGN CATEGORIES

Before a fire alarm system can be designed, the main objectives of the system is normally determined by a fire risk assessment, and should be provided as part of the fire system specification.

There are three system design categories;

  1. M FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS - Fire alarm systems under this category are manual fire alarm systems, where the alarm needs to be manually activated. For example, a person operating a manual call point (break glass unit)

  2. L FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS - life protection, L1 - automatic detection in all areas,  L2 -  automatic detection as defined in L3 as well as high risk hazardous areas, L3 - automatic detection installed on escape routes and in rooms opening onto escape routes, L4  - automatic detection within escape routes only and L5 - installed in a building with a specific risk (area  of high risk)

  3. P FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS - purely for the protection of property, which fall into two classification's P1 and P2.

BS5839-6 DOMESTIC FIRE DETECTION

DOMESTIC FIRE DETECTION

What is a Domestic Fire Alarm System?

There are two main types of domestic fire alarm systems.

1. Standalone alarms: These are individual units that are installed in various areas of the house. They are usually battery operated and emit a loud sound if they detect smoke or fire.

2. Hard-wired systems: These are types of systems that are connected to the buildings electrical supply and feature smoke, heat, carbon monoxide detectors linked together with alarm sounders that will activate throughout the property if fire is detected.

In addition to the basic types of systems described above, there are several other types of alarms and detectors that can be added to the system to provide increased protection. For example, heat detectors can be placed in places where smoke detectors may not b suitable, such as kitchens where steam of burnt toast can trigger a false alarm.

Its important to make sure that your fire alarm system is appropriately installed and maintained by a qualified technician. Regular testing and servicing of your alarms will help ensure that they are functioning correctly and provide adequate warning to you and your family in the event of a fire. For all domestic fire alarm systems, Norfolk Fire Group only uses Aico products.
